New York City's leading craft beer club, established in 1994 by Bill Coleman

Welcome to the Malted Barley Appreciation Society's web pages! We are a loose collective of New York City based craft beer lovers, both with homebrewing and general beer geekery. We try not to take ourselves too seriously, but take our craft beer industry guests very seriously.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at Mugs Ale House, 125 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn 11211 (Williamsburg, a short walk from the L train at Bedford Avenue or the G train at Nassau Avenue). The meetings take place in the rear dining room (you don't have to eat but can do before or during the meetings), or sometimes in the back yard in the summer. Our start time is 7.30pm, and usually runs to about 9.30 or 10. We always invite brewers, importers, wholesalers, and brewery reps as our guests who will bring free samples (free after just a $2 cover charge, that is). Everyone 21 or over is welcome to attend, there is no formal membership (don't be shy). We also encourage any homebrewers attending to bring their own samples to share after our industry guest(s) have finished their presentation.

On the $2 cover charge (up to a maximum of $20 for the year), this goes towards occasional print runs of t-shirts as a thank you for our guests, and replacement of club sampling glasses when needed. If there is no guest for any reason, there will be no charge that month.

The M.B.A.S. was founded well over two decades ago as a homebrewing club by Bill Coleman and then-homebrew store owner Jim Simpson, but over time transformed gradually into a group that simply embraces good beer of all kinds whether home or commercially brewed. Many of us don't brew at all, but enjoy learning about, tasting, and appreciating beer and how it is brewed. We also arrange occasional pub crawls and brewery visits.
